Postmedia to close Kennedy Heights plant

The Kennedy Heights printing plant will be put up for sale immediately and operations there will cease sometime in 2015, the union was told today by Paul Godfrey, CEO of Postmedia.

The company presented two possible options going forward. One is contracting out the work currently done at Kennedy Heights. The company has “entered into a contract with Transcontinental” to print papers effective early 2015, Godfrey told Local 2000 representatives.

The other option is the union and company reaching an agreement to open a new plant that would cost substantially less to operate than Kennedy Heights. Godfrey explained that the contract between Postmedia and Transcontinental will not go into effect if the company and union reach a deal before Nov. 18, 2013 that reduces costs at a new plant by 70-75 percent.

Our current contract language says “there will be no involuntary loss of employment of any regular employee during the life of the contract as a result of” contracting out.

Union officers will be consulting with our legal counsel and meeting with members to discuss our next steps.

The company said it was hoping to have further discussions soon.

Postmedia also announced today that it is selling the Calgary Herald building and land and will be contracting out printing beginning in November.

 

Vancouver Sun, The Province offering employee buyouts

The Vancouver Sun and The Province newspapers will offer their employees buyouts to deal with “unprecedented revenue declines,” their publisher said in a memo to employees that bluntly warned that unless changes were made the papers wouldn’t be likely to survive a drop in print advertising.

Tentative deal at Nanaimo Daily News

A tentative agreement has been reached between the Nanaimo Daily News and CEP Local 2000. More details will be available at the ratification vote, which will be held Wednesday October 31, time and place to be announced.

Efforts by Mailroom employees at the Daily News represented by CEP Local 525G have so far failed to reach an agreement.

TNG-CWA Guild              96% in favour of tentative agreement.
TNG-CWA Mailers          92% in favour of tentative agreement.
CEP Compositors             86% in favour of tentative agreement.
CEP Pressmen                   73% in favour of tentative agreement.

Nanaimo Daily News members vote in favour of strike

Members of Local 2000 working at the Nanaimo Daily News voted Wednesday in favour of a strike, if necessary, after talks with the employer broke down last week. Pressmen voted 100% in favour of strike action, while members in Composing, Sales, Pre-Press and Editorial covered under one agreement voted 85% in favour, in an effort to secure a new agreement with their employer.
CEP Local 525G, which represents the mailroom staff at the Daily News, had already taken a vote and the members delivered a 100% strike mandate to their committee.

Nanaimo Daily News members to take strike vote

Members of CEP Local 2000 working at the Nanaimo Daily News will take a strike vote, after talks with the employer broke down last Wednesday.

Voting will take place at the Beban Park Community Center  2300 Bowen Road on October 10th, with meetings scheduled for noon and 5:30 p.m.

The employer is seeking removal of language that protects against contracting out in both Editorial and Pre-Press/Ad Building departments. The company also wants to eliminate the Composing room agreement and reduce manning in the Pressroom. It is also offering a wage freeze for three years.

CEP Local 525G, which represents the mailroom staff at the Daily News, has already taken a vote and the members delivered a 100% strike mandate to their committee.

On a sad note, the Local would like to pass along condolences to the family of Brother Walter Cordery of the Editorial department at the Daily News who passed away last weekend. His funeral will be held Friday Oct. 5 at the Beban Park Center at 2:00 p.m.

CAW votes to merge with CEP union

Canadian Auto Workers delegates have voted unanimously to merge with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, combining two of Canada’s largest private-sector unions.

Tentative deal at PNG

A tentative four-year deal has been reached between Local 2000 and Pacific News Group covering all unionized employees of the Sun and Province newspapers.

“This was a very hard round of bargaining because of the difficult financial condition of the company and the troubled state of the newspaper industry,” said Local President Mike Bocking. “The agreement reached is the best possible under the circumstances.”

There will be no wage increase in the first three years of the contract, which expired Nov. 30, 2010, and a 1% raise on Dec. 1, 2013.

Complete details of the agreement will be released at chapel meetings Thursday and at an information meeting Sunday, July 22, 11 a.m. at the Metrotown Hilton hotel. Voting will follow immediately after the meeting.

Final details on voting will be announced tomorrow.
